Mission Statement: Habitat for Humanity of Sawyer County will demonstrate the love and teachings of Jesus Christ by working with the people to provide decent, safe and affordable housing in Sawyer County, Wisconsin.
Habitat for Humanity of Sawyer County is a local Habitat affiliate serving the people of Sawyer County, Wisconsin. Sawyer County received its affiliation in April, 2000. The affiliate’s goal is to build a minimum of one home every three years. Our yearly projects include ‘A Brush with Kindness’ assisting low-income families to repair and renovate their homes. It is through volunteer labor, monetary, and materials donations that Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses alongside our homeowner (partner) families.
Habitat for Humanity Has Five Core Committees
- Construction: Assumes responsibility for all aspects of the construction process.
- Family Selection: Identifies appropriate families to purchase a home.
- Family Support: Helps partner families with sweat equity hours, budget planning, home ownership issues, etc.
- Finance: Oversees all financial matters of the affiliate.
- Fundraising: Raise funds to build decent, low-cost housing in Sawyer County.
Habitat for Humanity Provides Affordable Housing by
- Seeking property that is donated or purchased at reduced cost
- Acquiring donated or at-cost building supplies
- Using volunteer labor
- Requiring partner families to contribute “sweat equity” hours
- Providing interest free mortgages that cover only the actual cost of construction
- Promoting activities directed toward raising funds to pay for purchased materials
Our Global Commitment
We are part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God’s love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Habitat for Humanity of Sawyer County is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.
Habitat for Humanity of Sawyer County has an open-door policy: All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. In short, Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion. As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize. This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.
Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor (sweat equity) in building their Habitat house and the houses of others. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable loans. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses.
